Cormac recently completed repairs to the Churchyard wall at St Germans. Working closely with the Dioceses and Cornwall Council’s Archaeological Unit, works had to be halted when a two person grave was unearthed by the team. Estimated to be over one hundred and fifty years old, the grave had become hidden over time by vegetation and although surveys were carried out and church records consulted, it was not detected before the repairs began. The discovery lead to a redesign of the repairs, as the original plan would have required the grave to be relocated.
The parapet was carefully removed and sympathetically rebuilt re-using the salvaged stone, locally sourced materials and traditional methods, preserving the look of the existing structure. Steel reinforcing bars were added to strengthen the masonry, securing it for many years to come.
