Biodiversity is fundamental to life – without it, we risk losing the healthy ecosystems that provide the clean air, food, and water we rely on. Yet, evidence shows local and national biodiversity is following the same alarming trends seen globally. 16% of UK species are at risk of extinction, and 151 species have already been lost since 1500. Even if we achieve net zero, we still face ecosystem collapse due to habitat destruction, pollution, and species decline.
Recognising this, Cornwall Council has declared both a climate emergency and an ecological emergency, reinforcing our collective responsibility to protect and restore nature. Across our business, we’re able to make a significant difference – from enhancing local green spaces and controlling invasive non-native species to facilitating community volunteering and increasing awareness of the health benefits of nature through our care services.
To ensure biodiversity remains at the heart of our work, we’ve recently updated our Nature Recovery Plan to reflect our new one-company ‘Corserv Solutions’ structure. This update captures the progress we’ve made so far and sets a clear framework for the next phase of our journey. Additionally, our Biodiversity Standard continues to provide essential guidance for operational managers, ensuring we safeguard habitats, protect wildlife, and meet compliance obligations.
On World Wildlife Day, let’s take a moment to recognise the essential role nature plays in our lives and work. Your ideas and actions matter – if you have sustainability suggestions or want to learn more, get in touch at sustainability@corservltd.co.uk
