Cormac helps Cornwall's beaches achieve international Blue Flag recognition

Several of Cornwall's most popular beaches are proudly flying the internationally recognised Blue Flag this summer, reflecting the high environmental, safety and management standards that visitors have come to expect from Cornwall's coastline.

Behind this achievement is a significant year-round effort led by Cormac's Beach Management team, working on behalf of Cornwall Council to coordinate Blue Flag and Seaside Award applications and ensure compliance with the extensive criteria required to achieve and retain these prestigious awards.

Eight beaches achieved Blue Flag status this year that we manage:

  • Widemouth
  • Crooklets
  • Summerleaze
  • Polzeath
  • Trevone/Porthmissen
  • Porthmeor
  • Porthminster
  • Gyllyngvase (managed in partnership with Cornwall Council's tenants)

A further five beaches received Seaside Awards:

  • Crackington Haven
  • Great Western
  • Porth
  • Sennen
  • Portreath

While the Blue Flag is a highly visible symbol of quality, achieving the award requires beaches to meet a comprehensive set of international standards covering four key areas:

  • Water quality
  • Environmental management
  • Environmental education
  • Safety and services

The criteria are rigorous and compliance is monitored throughout the season. Beaches must demonstrate excellent bathing water quality, maintain high environmental standards, provide public safety measures and deliver environmental education activities that help visitors understand and protect the coastal environment.

A key part of Cormac's role is working directly with local stakeholder groups, volunteers, beach operators, parish councils, landowners and community organisations to ensure beaches continue to meet Blue Flag requirements.

One of the most important elements of the programme is delivering at least five environmental education initiatives at every Blue Flag beach. These activities are designed to increase awareness of local wildlife, habitats, sustainability and responsible beach use, while encouraging public participation in protecting the environment.

The team also coordinates the environmental information displayed at each beach, including:

  • Blue Flag information boards
  • Water quality information
  • Maps showing facilities and safety features
  • Information about local ecosystems and sensitive habitats
  • Beach codes of conduct and visitor guidance

The work doesn't stop once the awards are announced.

Throughout the season, Cormac helps ensure beaches continue to meet the required standards through effective beach management, stakeholder engagement and compliance monitoring. This includes supporting clean beaches, appropriate waste and recycling facilities, visitor safety measures, accessibility provisions and the protection of environmentally sensitive areas.

Blue Flag beaches are also subject to announced and unannounced inspections, meaning maintaining standards is a year-round responsibility rather than a one-off application process.

The continued success of Cornwall's Blue Flag and Seaside Award beaches is the result of strong collaboration between Cornwall Council, Cormac, local communities, volunteers, beach operators and partner organisations.

Their collective efforts help ensure Cornwall's beaches remain among the best in the country, providing safe, clean and environmentally responsible destinations for both residents and visitors.

As Blue Flags fly above Cornwall's coastline once again, they represent not only exceptional beaches, but also the dedication, partnership and behind-the-scenes work that makes this international recognition possible year after year.
