Below are the most frequently asked questions If you would like to know more information please email us - apprenticeships@corservltd.co.uk
How many apprenticeships is Corserv offering?
In 2019/20 Corserv is offering up to 50 apprenticeships across Cornwall, nearly 20 of which are available in February 2019.
In what careers is Corserv offering apprenticeships?
This year we’ll be offering apprenticeships in construction management, communications, digital, business administration, civil engineering, horticulture, vehicle maintenance, management, accountancy and adult social care. You can find opportunities in civil engineering and highways maintenance but we’ll be rolling out new opportunities throughout the year.
Who are apprenticeships open to?
Apprenticeships are available to school leavers, those leaving the armed forces, and anyone, including existing employees, wanting to change or improve their career prospects. Degree level apprenticeships are ideal for anyone who’d like to study for a vocational degree but who is concerned about the cost. This way you can earn while you learn.
How many/which of these are degree level apprenticeships?
Currently two of our opportunities lead to a degree in civil engineering but we’ll be announcing more over the next few month.
For degree level apprenticeships, where will I study?
Degree level apprentices will also study at Exeter University.
For degree level apprenticeships who pays tuition fees?
The apprenticeship levy meets the cost of your tuition fees.
How much will I get paid as an apprentice?
Our level 2 apprentices start on £185 per week and can progress to £265 per week following successful reviews. After the first year all apprentices are paid a minimum of £15,559. Level 3 (professional) apprentices are recruited at £17,000.
I’ve heard that a lot of apprentices get taken on, essentially as cheap labour/to secure a Government levy but on fixed term contracts which don’t turn into real jobs. Is that the case here?
All our opportunities are based on full-time, permanent jobs so as long as you study/work like any other employee you’ll have a real job at the end.
Is there an age limit?
No. You can become an apprentice at any age. While many of our apprentices join us between the ages of 16 to 18, we have had apprentices who started with us in their 40s.
Where will the locations be? Is there transportation?
Locations depend on the apprenticeship role. In some cases this will mean working from one office most of the time, but in other roles you could be travelling all over the county. Transport isn’t provided, but as we have people from all over the county working all over the county, we’re sure something could be arranged.
How many hours of study and how many hours work?
You’ll spend at least 20% of the time learning (including time at college). This typically means one day a week for a full time apprentice.
How long do apprenticeships take?
This varies depending on the nature and level of the apprenticeship, but can be as little as 14 months and as much (particularly for degree level apprenticeships, as 4 years.
Why should I choose an apprenticeship?
You will learn a specialist trade or professional career that will always be in demand, you can continue your education up to Master’s level in some cases, while you get paid, and have the chance to forge a lifelong career in a growing Cornish company.
Who is Corserv and why should I work for them?
Corserv is one of the largest companies in Cornwall, employing more than 2,000 people across the county, and the parent company of more recognised names like Cormac, Cornwall Airport and Cornwall Development Company.
What happens if I want to move on after my apprenticeship?
We’re hoping that we train you well enough and keep you happy enough that you’ll stay with us and help us support the generation of apprentices after you. However, if you decide to move on, you’ll do so with our blessing.
How do I get on to an apprenticeship?
Like any employee you will be interviewed to check your suitability for the role and you might even be asked to undertake some tests – this is not an exam. Getting an apprenticeship is very much like applying for a job - you will need to show your enthusiasm and keenness for the role.
