Cormac is celebrating after being shortlisted in two categories at the Department for Transport (DfT) Special Recognition Awards 2026.
The awards received a record number of entries this year, with judges highlighting the exceptionally high standard of submissions. Against strong competition from across the UK highways sector, Cormac has been named a finalist for Employer Initiative of the Year for the Cormac Academy Programme (CAP), while Christian Maude has been shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year.
The shortlist is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved in developing and delivering the CAP. Since launching in November 2023, the programme has provided a structured pathway into frontline highways careers, helping people gain the skills, qualifications and experience to build a career in the industry.
To date, 46 candidates have enrolled on the programme, which has achieved a completion rate of 69.6%, exceeding the national average. The programme has also created opportunities for care-experienced young people through Cormac's partnership with Carefree Cornwall.
A special mention must go to Andy Wallis, Teresa Frost and the Notter Bridge Training Centre, whose commitment, leadership and determination have helped make the CAP the success it is today. This national recognition reflects the hard work, passion and perseverance that have gone into building a programme that is opening up new opportunities for people, strengthening the business and supporting the future of the highways.
Alongside the CAP nomination, congratulations also go to Christian on his national recognition. Earlier this year, he was named the overall winner of the DfT's Exceptional Frontline Apprentice Award, with judges praising his leadership, decision-making and performance during Cornwall's response to Storm Goretti.
These latest nominations are another example of how Cormac is strengthening its reputation as a career development organisation. From apprenticeships and professional qualifications to leadership and management programmes, Cormac continues to invest in helping colleagues develop, progress and build long-term careers. Today, 54 colleagues are undertaking apprenticeships across the business, and 50 colleagues are being supported towards professional qualifications.
Congratulations to Christian, Andy, Teresa and everyone involved in the Cormac Academy Programme. Being recognised on a national stage is a fantastic achievement, and we wish them all the best at the awards ceremony.
