Individuals supported by Corserv Care's Blantyre Day Opportunities enjoyed a memorable day at Blue Light Day 2026, held at the Royal Cornwall Showground in July.
Now in year 19, Blue Light Day is an annual event designed to help people with learning disabilities and autism build confidence by interacting with emergency services. By creating opportunities to meet and engage with police officers, firefighters, paramedics and other emergency responders in a relaxed and welcoming environment, the aim is to ensure people feel comfortable seeking help if they ever need support in their communities.
The popular event welcomed around 1,000 attendees and brought together a wide range of organisations, including the police, fire and rescue service, ambulance service, NHS, coastguards, blood bikes, charities and local community groups.
A highlight of the day was a performance by the Blantyre sign singing choir, led by Darren Williams (affectionately known as "The Signing Man"). Taking to the main stage at 1pm, the choir gave a fantastic performance.
This year, we also introduced an interactive "Find a Signing Buddy" activity, which created plenty of enthusiasm. Individuals were encouraged to find someone with a matching signing sticker, helping to spark conversations and connections with new people; once they found their buddy, they were rewarded with a Corserv cap. The event organiser praised the activity, saying it created a real buzz and helped encourage meaningful social interaction.
Adding to the excitement, Charlie, who attends Blantyre, was proud to be interviewed by the BBC during the event and later appeared on BBC Spotlight, sharing how much he enjoys Blue Light Day and why the event is so important to him.
Reflecting on another successful year, the event provided a fantastic opportunity for people to have fun, make new connections and build confidence while engaging with the emergency services and wider community.
