The Cormac Environment team spent an energetic and inspiring day at Wadebridge School in July, helping Year 9 students explore how thoughtful design can improve wellbeing, biodiversity and the spaces around them.
Taking part as “Designers for the Day”, 18 students were guided through a fast-paced design challenge that saw them survey their school grounds, analyse opportunities for improvement, and develop creative design ideas for the future of their campus.
Throughout the day, students immersed themselves in discussions around wellbeing and wildlife, while interactive activities, colour and collage workshops encouraged them to think creatively about how outdoor spaces can be transformed to benefit both people and nature.
The event was delivered by members of the Cormac Environment team, including Melissa Ralph, Making Space for Nature Manager; Agnieszka Gwizdz, Environment Lead; Emma Burden, Chartered Environmentalist; and Kelly Strange, Urban Ranger.
Alongside the design activities, students also took part in outdoor games and a popular "Spin the Wheel" careers session, giving them the opportunity to learn more about the wide variety of roles available within Cormac and the environmental sector. The discussions highlighted future opportunities including volunteering, work experience, and potential career pathways.
The enthusiasm and engagement from students throughout the day was clear to see, with one student commenting that their favourite part was:
"Finding out what CORMAC actually do."
The workshop also received glowing feedback from Wadebridge School staff. Sue, Careers Teacher at Wadebridge School, said:
"Thank you so much for the amazing day you have delivered for the students today. It was well planned and thought out. The range of activities you squeezed into a busy day was superb. This is the first time we have focused on an environmental theme for the students. I hope you are all very proud of what you achieved today."
Headteacher Steve also praised the team's impact, describing the day as:
“A real example of how businesses can make such a difference to a school community. I cannot speak highly enough in regards to all of the Cormac staff, who were professional, approachable and set a lovely atmosphere for the students to engage with the activities.”
The event demonstrates how Cormac's expertise can support schools and colleges to create greener, healthier and more engaging environments, while also helping young people better understand the career opportunities available within the environmental sector.
