Visitors and residents are already enjoying the stunning transformation of the Malakoff in St Ives thanks to Cormac’s completion of one of the flagship public realm projects within the Town Deals. The team delivered a spectacularly refurbished public space overlooking the harbour, featuring a bespoke bus shelter, high-quality granite paving, custom granite seating and planters, new lighting, street furniture, bike stands and a reinstated historic mill wheel feature.
Behind the finished result lies an impressive amount of skill and craftsmanship. Cormac's specialist masonry team hand-laid approximately 440 individual granite setts, covering more than 137m², and installed 11 bespoke seating areas comprising 61 individual granite sections. Each element was carefully positioned to follow the natural contours of the Malakoff, ensuring the seating mirrored the site's gentle slope while making the most of the stunning coastal views. The team also carried out repairs to the historic outer wall as part of the works and local specialists fabricated bespoke steel fixings to secure the reinstated mill wheel, while bronze detailing was incorporated into the bollards, bike stands and mill wheel artwork, creating a subtle link to the Hepworth sculpture and the site's artistic heritage.
Andy Berryman, Cormac Contracts Manager, said:
"We’re very proud to have played a leading role in transforming the Malakoff. The project has been technically complex and involved the co-ordination of specialist skills, bespoke materials and heritage assets, all within a fairly constrained area. We are proud of the quality of the finished scheme and the collaborative approach that's brought the vision to life. It’s a fantastic example of the expertise that exists across Cormac. Well done team."
