Restoring access and preserving Cornwall's heritage

A popular countryside footpath at Grade Ruan has been given a new lease of life, following the successful completion of two replacement timber bridges by Cormac's Environment Structures team.

The footpath had been closed for an extended period after both existing bridges failed, cutting off an important route across the confluence of a Cornish river.

The replacement structures presented several challenges, particularly due to the site's ground conditions. Working closely with both sets of landowners, the team were able to design and construct the new bridges during the recent favourable weather conditions, completing the scheme in July.

The pair of new bridges have reconnected the footpath with a nearby farm shop and campsite (just in time for the peak summer season!), restoring an important link for residents and visitors enjoying the surrounding countryside.

A key consideration throughout the project was the preservation of the historic clapper bridge at the site, ensuring this important feature can continue to be appreciated by future generations.

The scheme was made possible thanks to capital funding from Cornwall Council, alongside the cooperation of the landowners, and the hard work of the Environment Structures team.
